About

As being part of the National Cultural Fund of Hungary, Cseh Tamás Program supports the Hungarian music scene including talented young bands, clubs, radios and tv channels from all over the country. The Program Office organises free events and workshops for both beginners and experts of the Hungarian music industry, and works on a prospering Hungarian music export.

The budget of the Program is partly the income of the tax of empty data media. The Cseh Tamás Program was named after a beloved musician who passed away in the recent years.

The Progam has several subprograms:

  • Supporting young talents
  • Media support: radios, tv channels, online and print media
  • Clubs (which are not in Budapest)
  • Music Management workshops
  • Music export
  • Preserving Hungarian Music Heritage
  • Royalty subprogram
  • CSTP bands and CSTP brand communication in Hungarian summer festivals

Hungarian Bands at EuroSonic

The Hungarian Middlemist Red was formed in the end of 2012 in Budapest. The band's main inspiration channels from the late 60's and the early 70's rock bands like The Doors and The Beatles, as well as bands from the new wave of psychedelic rock like The Black Angels and Tame Impala.

In november 2013, they released their first EP called As If You Could Mess This Up, which gained popularity in the country and the band, with their song Single Switcheroo, won an alternative song contest hosted by a major Hungarian website.

Thanks for the contest, Deezer also payed attention to the band and they chose them to participate in their international competition called Deezer Young Guns. They were selected into the most promising four out of 182 country's young talents and at the end of the contest Middlemist Red won.

Two years after their founding the band already got invited to play at the prestigious SXSW (South By Southwest) Showcase Festival in the USA, the world’s biggest music industry event for seeking new stars. The group’s successful debut at the festival got them a slot at CBGB Festival in New York City in 2013, a number of shows in London, UK, and an MTV EMA local prize for the Best Hungarian Act 2013.After playing at the 2013 SXSW the group released the first LP titled Mama Don’t You Recognize, Ivan & The Parazol? The album got positive reviews from both the fans and critics in Hungary.

The recognition grew forward when they got invited to support the mighty classic rockers, Deep Purple at the Budapest stop of their 2014 arena tour in February. After their opening show living legend Roger Glover, bass player of Deep Purple personally felicitated the group on their performance.

MiddlemistRed

In the meantime the band’s hit song ‘Take My Hand’ from their debut LP became the official promo song of the SXSW 2014, so following the debut at an arena setting, the band rushed back to the US again to play the legendary Palm Door in Austin, TX during the 2014 SXSW festival. Their performance now caught not just the audience, but the attention of the press internationally and got them positive feedback for their live shows.

Ivan & The Prazol’s second full length album was released in March 2014, titled Mode Bizarre. The album release show was a sold out performance at a venue known throughout Europe, A38 (900 capacity).

Their second album got the band national recognition and flew them to the Main Stages of the biggest festivals in their area. They played the main stage at Sziget 2014 and delivered the festival’s anthem in 2014: ‘Together’ from their 2nd LP - Mode Bizarre.

After a short tour in Germany, the band released their third album in Hungary entitled The All Right Nows in November 2015. This album bears the imprint of a band who are in harmony with the world, and according to the band the record is capable of sharing the energies of live performances that the band is known for.

In terms of arrangement and sound the band believes that they were able to develop. Extensive vocal arrangements and the use of classical instruments characterize the album. By being their own producers, by using authentic ‘70s instruments, like different analog synths, organs and even a theremin and by recording the whole album to tape the band could accomplish a record which they think is capable of giving back the energies of the live performances for which the band is known for.

A little reggae, a little latin, a little punk, a little rock and roll,in Hungarian = “huppogós” (hupping!)

“A never heard mixture of Bob Marley, Manu Chao and the Hungarian spirit...their music always shakes me up when I feel down” – Ádám Bérczes, CLS Music/Egység Média

Ocho Macho was formed in Szombathely, a city in the North Western part of Hungary, in 2003. Initially the band played cover versions of hits from Manu Chao and Bob Marley among others with the simple intention to become a great party-band.

Motivated by the hugely positive feedback, the band’s members decided to invest more time, energy and money in Ocho Macho with the purpose to become a professional band, composing and playing their own songs. Their ambition and dedication have by now led to several club concerts and festival performances both in Hungary and abroad.

In 2007 they released their first single featuring three songs, and a year later, at Christmas 2008, their debut album, El Mundo Fantastico was released. It was soon signed to CLS Music, a key Hungarian independent label and thanks to the impressive sales figures at concerts, El Mundo Fantastico entered the album charts at number four.

Founded by violinist and guitarist Robert Farkas (Besh o drom, Little Cow), the band takes pride in collaborating with various singers (including Melanie Pain from Nouvelle Vague and Tibor Kiss from Quimby). For their debut performance in the Netherlands (Der Aa-Kerk, Groningen on Thursday, January 14, 2016 from 23.45 as part of the Eurosonic Festival), Hungarian blues and rock icon György Ferenczi (who is also a devil of his harmonicas), and Viennese electronica and jazz darling Tania Saedi will join the dynamic band for an evening of a musical adventure.

In early 20th-century Budapest, in hundreds of cafes scattered around the city, urban Gypsy musicians enthralled crowds, playing everything from chansons to popular film ditties to jazz. Born into musical families, these artists had direct cosmopolitan lines to what was hot in Paris, New York, and Buenos Aires—and an astounding ability to listen once and then make a song their own. Urban Gypsy entertainers were renowned for being able to play anything and everything. When an opera premiered one night at Budapest’s opera house, its music a well-guarded secret, the balcony seats were filled with enthusiastic Gypsy artists, who played their own versions of its catchiest arias later that night in the cafés. Robert Farkas, the band’s violinist and lead figure, himself of Gyspy heritage, wanted to channel this great technical skill and musical savvy. Farkas had both conservatory training and a long history of playing with rock bands, and knew the Budapest scene like the back of his hand. He gathered musicians from unexpected places, including the rock bands he played with, hoping to inject that same energy and thrill into music that had become as faded as an old photograph. Replacing the music’s kitsch with great musicality, Farkas and Budapest Bár have found just the right balance of vintage vibe and contemporary feel.

The remarkable repertoire and penchant for virtuosic entertainment nearly died out in the 1970s, when younger generations turned away from once well-loved tunes and when the Hungarian Communist regime frowned on overly bourgeois café and cabaret music. Budapest Bár, born out of a renewed Gypsy scene and a vibrant rock underground, has brought the charm and wit, the skill and panache of this era and these almost forgotten bands back. With their unique approach they created a new genre that we can call modern gypsy music from Budapest.

Though many European listeners are familiar with the complex, intense music of rural Gypsy communities, Budapest was also home to urban, well-educated, highly trained families of Gypsy musicians. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these in-demand performers toured the world’s major cities, picking up sounds from rumba to swing as they went. Budapest Bár have kept this open eared approach, and audiences are just as likely to hear an American, a French or a Hungarian torch song as a pop hit.
